Unser neuer Professor f\u00fcr Elektronische Komposition stellt sich vor\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Heute Abend (2. Juni 2018) findet das offizielle Antrittskonzert unseres neuen Lehrenden der Elektronischen Komposition, Michael Edwards<\/strong>, gemeinsam mit Barbara Maurer<\/a> und Susanne Achilles\u00a0an der Folkwang Universit\u00e4t der K\u00fcnste statt. Am 12.7. reist Michael Edwards zum World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb (solo Alt-Saxophon, Ensemble und Elektronik, „HOTPO“), und am 20. Juli 2018 wird sein St\u00fcck Durchhalteverm\u00f6gen<\/a> (solo Violine) beim\u00a0Valencia International Performance Academy & Festival aufgef\u00fchrt.<\/p>\n

— Biografie —<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michael David Edwards, geb. 1968 im nordwest- englischen Cheshire, studierte zun\u00e4chst an der Universit\u00e4t von Bristol bei Adrian Beaumont. Weiteren Kompositions-\u00a0unterricht erhielt er privat von Gwyn Pritchard. An der Stanford University in Kalifornien studierte er Computermusik bei John Chowning.<\/p>\n

Er arbeitete als Softwareingenieur am Canon Research Centre im Silicon Valley, war Gastprofessor am Mozarteum in Salzburg und war als Komponist Gast am Forschungsinstitut f\u00fcr Akustik\/Musik, IRCAM, in Paris.
\nVon 2002 bis 2017 lehrte er an der Universit\u00e4t Edinburgh und seit Oktober 2017 ist er Professor f\u00fcr Elektronische Komposition an der Folkwang Universit\u00e4t der K\u00fcnste.<\/p>\n

Angenommen, zeitliche Faktoren und dergleichen spielten keine Rolle: G\u00e4be es einen<\/em>
\nMusik-fremden Studiengang oder eine Ausbildung, der oder die Sie heute reizen w\u00fcrde?<\/em><\/p>\n

Meeresforscher<\/p>\n

Stellen wir das Studieren, wie Sie es erlebt haben, dem Kompositionsstudium heute gegen\u00fcber. In wie fern hat es sich ver\u00e4ndert?<\/em><\/p>\n

Als ich Student war waren zwei Facetten der heutigen Szene so gut wie gar nicht zu finden: Improvisation und Computermusik (oder allgemeiner ausgedr\u00fcckt, Musik, die im weitesten Sinn irgendwie mit Hilfe des Computers gemacht wird). Beide waren \u00a0nat\u00fcrlich schon vorhanden, waren aber nicht Teil der meisten Uni-Curricula nicht. Ich finde es super, dass heutzutage die verschiedenste Arten Musik zu machen an der Uni nicht nur gesch\u00e4tzt, sondern durchaus unterrichtet und praktiziert werden.<\/p>\n

Haben Sie sich als Komponist durch das Unterrichten ver\u00e4ndert?<\/em><\/p>\n

St\u00e4ndig. Ich bekomme links und rechts Ideen durch den Unterricht, nicht nur im Austausch mit StudentInnen sondern auch, dass ich durch das Unterrichten viel dar\u00fcber nachdenken muss, was, wie und warum ich eigentlich meine eigene Musik mache so wie ich sie mache. Auch wenn man \u00e4lter wird (bin gerade 50 geworden) merkt man im Austausch mit StudentInnen, was der jungen Generation wichtig ist, wie das von der \u00e4lteren Generation gepr\u00e4gt ist und wie nicht. Das zeigt manchmal eine neue Abspaltung oder kl\u00e4rt den Weg.<\/p>\n

— \u00dcber seine Arbeit —<\/p>\n

„As a composer I work in the area of instrumental, electronic, and algorithmic composition (software-generated music). My main focus is an amalgam of these, combining acoustic instruments and digitally processed or synthesised sound.<\/p>\n

I firmly believe that by coding your own musical ideas you can explore them with a depth that would be impossible otherwise. To not code your own algorithms would be a little like trying to get inside a culture without knowing its language.<\/p>\n

I generally aim to blend rather than oppose acoustic and electronic sound sources, to present a coherent sonic image where the new and old not only meet but cross-fertilise. This goes beyond the surface sound world into the very musical structures themselves. I algorithmically generate my instrumental and computer music structures from the same musical data, creating a more deeply-rooted synthesis of these two often structurally incompatible sound worlds.<\/p>\n

Seeing myself as part of the experimental tradition of Western composition means I refuse to be pinned down to any particular aesthetic or approach. I grew up in a musically pluralistic environment and from my earliest years had no problem switching between Hendrix and Ligeti. So I improvise too, on saxophones, laptop, and MIDI wind controller.<\/p>\n

My music, then, ranges from long, delicate meditations for the piano and computer, to dense and aggressive ensemble music exploring performance failure, to freely improvised electro-instrumental noise. I am decreasingly occupied with the specification of fixed musical details and increasingly interested in making flexible software to create variable scores as expressions of the musical-generative idea–I’m just swapping one code for another, really.“<\/p>\n
