The interdisciplinary project “Color Code”, was produced with the support of the Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Forschung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfallen (Germany), in cooperation with the University of Bielefeld, the Folkwang-Hochschule Essen and the group “Multimedia und Kunst” (all in Germany).

The main idea of this project came from Gottfried Jäger and Karl Holzhauser (both professors for photography at the Fachhochschule Bielefeld (Germany), who were in charge of the 7th Vilem Flusser Symposium (also in the city of Bielefeld), from November the 26th to 29th 1998. “Color Code” was the opening event of the symposium.

Flusser (1920-1991) was a media-philosopher, who made new and very interesting theories about photography and media. “Color Code” was based on his text “Postmoderne Farben” (postmodern colours) (1988), where the “quantifying” (mathematical) and “qualifying” (artistic) codes should be expressed with the help of colours. In the form of an audiovisual Concert installation “Color Code” makes the idea of color also present with sounds (Klangfarbe) due to the use of electroacoustic music in all it’s possibilities (tape, real time computer generated live-electronics and a live instrument). A new and very important point is that of bringing together decisions coming from the “pure” rational thought and the free imagination, that is mixing up graphic art, music and mathematics.

For the generation of sounds and also for the programming of the live electronics, very simple and basic procedures were used, which should be the point of departure for the whole composition, equivalent to the “visual” primary colours on the canvas.

In a second version the double projection is reduced to only one canvas. Nevertheless, the whole projection is “live” generated (in real time) from an O2 SGI computer.

An additional part for the viola, which was not present in the premiere (November 1998) was performed for the first time at the 9th Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival (April 2000).

Group ANIMATO

The name describes here an interdisciplinary group of investigators for the production and reflection of art in the time of electronic media. It’s members are artists, scientists and technicians from many universities in Nordrhein Westfalen (Germany). The group varies with every project. The first project was “Animato”, which was produced also due to the initiative of Prof. Gottfried Jäger in 1995 and which gave the group it’s name. It’s members are: Gottfried Jäger, Karl Martin Holzhauser and Thomas Noack (Fachhochschule Bielefeld- Germany), Peter Serocka and Andreas Dress (Universität Bielefeld- Germany), Javier Alejandro Garavaglia (ICEM- Folkwang-Hochschule Essen- Germany).
